Since 1992, the first advocate for sloths in Costa Rica
The Sloth Sanctuary of Costa Rica, established in 1992, is the world's first sloth-only facility dedicated to the rescue, rehabilitation, and care of injured, orphaned, and abandoned sloths. The sanctuary operates under Costa Rican wildlife conservation regulations and houses sloth ambassadors in protective enclosures, as well as a NICU/Nursery for rescued animals.
The sanctuary offers guided tours including the one-hour Buttercup Tour and a two-hour Insider's Tour that includes a behind-the-scenes visit to the NICU/Nursery. It also conducts research on sloth biology, physiology, and genetics, provides educational curriculum resources, and works on rainforest biodiversity and sloth release programs.
