Rescuing and caring for illegally trafficked chimpanzee orphans while working to solve the root of the problem through awareness and forest protection.
Sanaga-Yong Chimpanzee Rescue (SYCR) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that provides permanent sanctuary for over 70 chimpanzees confiscated from the illegal bushmeat and pet trade in Cameroon. Rescued chimpanzees, many orphaned as infants when their mothers were killed by poachers, live in lush forested enclosures where they receive veterinary care, nutrition, and the opportunity to form social bonds.
Beyond direct animal care, SYCR works with Cameroon's Ministry of Forestry and Wildlife (MINFOF) to support law enforcement, and has helped establish the Wall-Mbargue Wildlife Refuge to protect habitat for chimpanzees, gorillas, and other endangered wildlife. The organization also runs an education program for local communities and primary school children to promote conservation values and humane treatment of animals.
